THE DANCE CRAZY, Inc. PROGRAM

GENERAL INFORMATION

The purpose of the DANCE CRAZY program is to introduce ballroom dancing to 4th and 5th grade students in local school districts throughout the Capital Region.

The DANCE CRAZY program’s ballroom dance Syllabus will be used in schools participating in the program. DANCE CRAZY will contract with a professional ballroom dance instructor (for details, see below) to teach a ten-week or a sixteen-week session of ballroom dance instruction to thirty children in grades 4 and 5 (15 boys and 15 girls). There is no fee charged to the schools for the ten-week session.

Your school chooses either the 10-week or the 16-week session:

The 10-week session is for 15 boys and 15 girls. There is no participation in the inter-school competition in May. This ten-week session is free. The school can choose to end this session with a ballroom dance demonstration/performance at the school, if desired.
The 16-week session includes the above free 10 weeks for 30 children, followed by an additional six weeks of lessons for a chosen 12 of the 30 children. These 12 students will represent your school in the inter-school competition in May. There is a $600 fee charged to your school for this last six weeks of classes and participation in the competiton.

The Program:

Phase 1: In October and November, Dance Crazy’s volunteer ballroom dancers will come to your school and teach 6 beginner ballroom lessons to school staff. These school staff members will then be used in the children’s classes as teaching assistants, and can also be used in future years.
Phase 2: Beginning the second week of January, Dance Crazy will provide a professional ballroom dance instructor to teach the thirty children in the ten-week program, as well as volunteer ballroom dancers who will serve as teaching assistants. These classes continue through to either March (for the 10 week program) or May (for the 16 week program). The class size of thirty children is the number that was approved by the NY State Education Department. Therefore, no more than thirty children may participate.

The thirty children that are chosen to participate in the program will be selected by DANCE CRAZY staff after the first two classes, based upon the following criteria:

timing
posture
ability to pick up steps
coordination

Fee Schedule:

Schools opting for the 16-week session will participate in the inter-school competition and receive the additional six weeks of classes after 12 of the 30 children are chosen to be in the Competition. The fee for participation in this portion of the program is $600 per school. For the 2008-2009 program, half of this fee is due on November 14, 2008 and the other half is due January 9, 2009.

Competition Information:

If your school chooses to participate in the Dance Crazy program and the inter-school Competition, the school must agree to provide a room where the competition will take place.

The cost for your school that is associated with participating in the competition is $600, and this covers the cost for:

the professional instructor to teach the additional classes and to participate in the competition, and
the judges participation
recognition ribbons, etc.

Participation in the inter-school competition involves an additional six weeks of ballroom dance lessons for 12 children (6 couples) that completed the ten-week session of the Dance Crazy program. These 12 children will be selected by DANCE CRAZY, based upon observation of interest, enthusiasm, and skill level. The six couples will attend the Competition. The winning school will be the Ballroom Champions for 2008, and will be the temporary owner of the treasured DANCE CRAZY trophy. This means that the winning school earns the right to display the trophy in their school for the up-coming year, until the following year’s DANCE CRAZY competition, at which point the trophy will then be returned to Dance Crazy and then given to the new Ballroom Champions.

Note: Once a school completes the full sixteen weeks and participates in the competition, the school is then considered to be a Dance Crazy Alumni School candidate. The Alumni School program is one that we offer to schools who would like to remain in our program after completing the sixteen week program.

Application Process:

Upon receipt and review of your application, DANCE CRAZY will contact your school by the first week of school in September with the following information:

Notification of your school’s acceptance or denial of your application to participate in the DANCE CRAZY program. Acceptance depends upon the availability of funding, the number of volunteer ballroom dancers available, the commitment of the school, etc.

By signing this application, your school is committing to participating in the DANCE CRAZY program for the school year 2008-2009, if your school is accepted into the program. While participating in the DANCE CRAZY program, the school will:

Put forth its best effort to coordinate the participation of school staff in the beginner ballroom dance lessons that are provided to the staff free of charge.
Maintain its dedication to completing DANCE CRAZY’S ten or sixteen-week session and the inter-school Competition (if that option is chosen by the school).
Agree that Dance Crazy retains the right to remove disruptive children from the program.
Assume responsibility for students in our program, including those that leave the classroom for any reason, including illness, disruptive behavior, etc.
Provide one or more school staff who will be physically present at all times during the classes and are responsible for maintaining discipline among the students.
Agree that Dance Crazy, Inc. retains the right to discontinue the program in the school if the terms discussed herein are not adhered to.
